Frustration over backlog of unemployment claims

A resolution in the state Senate last week called on Gov. Phil Murphy to “take all measures necessary” to address the backlog of unemployment claims and reopen in-person One Stop Career Centers, which have been closed since the earliest days of the pandemic. Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-Union) described it as “one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in Trenton … a public censure of the majority party’s own governor and each of the Democrats joined in the Senate and all the Republicans. You never see that.”

“We have people who aren’t receiving any income, six months plus. The emails are heartbreaking,” said Sen. Fred Madden (D-Gloucester), chair of the labor committee. Madden said he would have liked to have heard from Department of Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo at Monday’s committee meeting. He said Asaro-Angelo has agreed to Thursday’s meeting, at which point a fuller-throated reaction may be forthcoming from committee members who held their fire on Monday.
