Wednesday marks the third day in U.S. Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson. She has faced tough questions from Republican senators who are challenging her record as a judge and as a public defender, pressing her on issues like abortion, critical race theory, gender, her religion and on some of her sentencing decisions in cases involving sex offenders. Jackson repeated her pledge to “stay in my lane,” saying she understands the limitations of the court to interpret and not create policy. She followed precedent set by other recent Supreme Court nominees by not sharing her thoughts on packing the court.
Tuesday’s questioning lasted some 12 hours. Kim Mutcherson, co-dean at the Rutgers-Camden Law School, was in the gallery to witness the historic confirmation hearing of potentially the first Black woman on the Supreme Court and she shares some of the key take-aways.
