The first cannabis-infused food item approved for sale in New Jersey is a brownie made by ButACake, a a Black- and women-owned business in Jersey City. Owners Matha Figaro, a trained pastry chef, and Yasmin Obie first started selling peach-flavored dissolvable oral strips in December and are now ready to bring their peanut-butter-and-jelly brownie to at least 10 dispensaries around the state.

The Cannabis Regulatory Commission has yet to roll out statewide regulations for a broader edible market. ButACake is a brand manufactured and sold through a partnership with a licensed operator in New Jersey. The state allows licensed cannabis manufacturers waivers to sell such products.

Figaro, CEO of ButACake, said, “We’ve been … going back and forth and pleading our case to the CRC and the powers that be and for our brownie to be the first one to launch in the legal market in New Jersey, it’s just an incredible accomplishment. It’s just two of us girls from Jersey … with the help of our colleagues in the industry…”
