Secretary of State Tahesha Way is reminding folks that if you want to vote in the Nov. 8 general election for Congress, county or local office, you must do so by Tuesday, Oct. 18. Nicole DiRado, the Union County Board of Elections Administrator, says this year they’ve seen an upward trend of voters registering online. So what’s motivating so many people to come out and vote? Jesse Burns, executive director of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, says she’s noticed that voters are motivated to elect candidates that reflect their views on controversial issues.

“This year we are seeing a lot of folks wondering about school board elections and local elections as well. And you see that motivation because you see more controversial issues at the school-board level and people are motivated to pick candidates that represent them as well. We have been focused on high schools and colleges where we are seeing enthusiasm from young voters. They are motivated to vote around issues that have to do with reproductive and threats to democracy and misinformation and ensuring disinformation is not eroding the public trust in our voting system,” said Burns.

In an effort to keep a more accurate and transparent process, Hunterdon County elections administrator Beth Thompson says they gave voters an opportunity to try new voting machines ahead of elections.
