Former congressman Tom Malinowski, a career diplomat who has worked on human rights issues, said in an interview with NJ Spotlight News that he is worried that student protests — and the debates around them — are being co-opted by outside actors and agendas that go beyond pushing for an end to the war in Gaza.
In a series of posts on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Malinowski urged students to keep their focus and demands on a ceasefire and the war itself.
Protests and encampments have swept college campuses around the nation in recent weeks, with students calling on their universities to cut ties with the Israeli government in response to the ongoing war in Gaza, which has brought a heavy civilian death toll.
