Bill O’Dea, longtime county commissioner, this weekend declared his bid to become Jersey City’s next mayor. The lifelong resident made his pitch to hundreds of enthusiastic supporters, pledging to bring affordability and to hold developers accountable to the community.

At his campaign announcement, O’Dea said: “We’re not going to let folks from the outside come here and decide our destiny. That’s why we have so many people here today.”

Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey announced his own bid last week.

Other candidates are likely to also enter the race. The election is still two years’ off.

Editor’s note: Bill O’Dea is the brother of NJ Spotlight News’ senior writer and projects editor Colleen O’Dea, who will abstain from covering the race to avoid a conflict of interest.
