At Ellie’s Academy, a child care center in Somerville, the entry ritual is designed to help keep COVID-19 out of a facility where most children are simply too young for vaccinations. Some 520,000 children in New Jersey aren’t yet eligible for vaccination against the disease, and health officials say they’re all at risk.

“For children under five, the best way to protect them is to get everyone around them vaccinated … If I had a parent using a child care center, I’d absolutely ask them, ‘Are your workers immunized?’” said Dr. Meg Fisher, special adviser to New Jersey’s health commissioner.
