Holiday travel takes off ahead of major weather challenges

COVID-19, flu and RSV also threaten holiday plans

The holiday weekend is fast approaching and there are a few factors that could put a damper on the festivities. As we’ve been reporting, many people are getting sick with flu, RSV or COVID-19. According to the state health department, there were more than 3,000 new confirmed COVID-19 cases Thursday and 21 new deaths.

Beyond trying to stay healthy, New Jerseyans face another challenge — Mother Nature, as bitter-cold temperatures are heading our way. If you are planning to travel — or waiting for the arrival of family and friends — there’s also a massive snowstorm to contend with in parts of the U.S.

“We’ve got several states across the country that have already declared states of emergency because of the weather system. So those things have ripple affects across all of the airways. So you need to plan, and the earlier you can get to the airport, the better,” said Tracy Noble of AAA Mid-Atlantic. And, said Noble, “We’re seeing an increase of 27% of people travelling either by bus, train or taking a cruise, so that’s drastic compared to where we were last year.’
