The fallout from a violent night at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women continues to spread. A grand jury on Tuesday indicted 14 corrections officers in connection with actions that occurred in the early hours of Jan. 12, 2021. On that date, inmates were forcibly removed from their cells, some were beaten and two were severely injured, according to the state attorney general’s office, which said the officers acted following escalating tensions with some inmates. Grand jurors returned an indictment against the officers on charges of conspiracy, official misconduct, tampering with public records and aggravated assault.
This event is just one in a series of incidents of violence and sexual abuse at the Hunterdon County facility, which was independently investigated. A report on that investigation’s findings led Gov. Phil Murphy to call for closure of the facility.
