Gov. Phil Murphy said Wednesday there’s a chance he might ditch the current mask mandate for New Jersey school students when classes reconvene in September. “I’ll put on my epidemiological hat and say three months from now might as well be five lifetimes in a pandemic. So the answer is — absolutely — our minds are open.”
The mask mandate for kids has drawn fire from most New Jersey Republicans and some school superintendents here. On Wednesday, Murphy today toured Bergenfield High School with U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to encourage in-person learning. Cardona said the infusion of federal aid as schools reopen offers educators and families “the closest we have to a reset button on things we know didn’t work in education.”
