Gov. Phil Murphy announced he’ll rescind his intensely controversial mask mandate for both schools and childcare centers on March 7 — ending some 18 months of furious debate. Citing declining COVID-19 cases and rising vaccination rates, Gov. Murphy said, “This is not a declaration of victory, as much as an acknowledgment that we can responsibly live with this thing … Perhaps most importantly, this is a huge step back to normalcy for our kids.” Murphy said school districts will have the option to continue requiring masks. The governor will renew the state Public Health Emergency by 30 days — to make sure mask mandates remain in place until March 7. That could disappoint some anti-mask advocates like Tina Petersen — whose kids attend Toms River schools. “If we’re able to do it March 7, then I believe we’re able to do it today.”
