Of all of New Jersey’s 40 legislative districts, none have been as tightly contested this election season as Monmouth County’s District 11, a split district currently represented by Democratic state Sen. Vin Gopal and Republican Assemblywomen Kim Eulner and Marilyn Piperno.

The district has become a flash point for several of the state’s latest political battles, including over protections for transgender students in schools and over the future of offshore wind development.

Republicans are targeting Gopal’s seat as a must-win for their hopes of flipping control of the state Senate. To gain control, the GOP would need to win at least five seats currently held by Democrats, while protecting its own seats.
