The Food and Drug Administration is planning to announce later this week that people will be able to mix and match COVID-19 booster shots. A health official told the Associated Press the FDA is expected to say that using the same brand for a booster is preferable but allowing for mixing and matching could make it easier for people to get boosters and allow people who had adverse reactions to a vaccine to try a different one. Other countries allow for mixing and matching.

The news comes a week after a study from the National Institutes of Health showed people who got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine saw a bigger increase in antibodies from a Moderna or Pfizer booster shot compared to a Johnson & Johnson booster. Boosters for all COVID-19 vaccines could be authorized by the end of the week, following meetings by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
