A group of environmental activists is challenging the Murphy administration over its alleged failure to implement necessary regulations to meet the state’s goals of cutting greenhouse gas emissions. At an appellate court hearing in New Brunswick on Wednesday, attorney John Reichman for the environmentalists argued the administration ignored critical amendments to the state’s Global Warning Response Act.
“Just two weeks ago we were in New Brunswick for Governor Murphy’s big, clean-energy announcement … [on] new targets for the state that will be achieved more than a decade in the future. But today the governor is failing to use his authority to stop the seventh new fossil fuel project. He’s already approved six in his first five years in office,” said Matt Smith, New Jersey director with the nonprofit Food and Water Watch.
The Murphy administration in legal filings argued that its policies have the state on track to meet the law’s targets and that that makes writing new benchmark regulations unnecessary.
