Garden State Equality Executive Director Christian Fuscarino, discusses New Jersey’s progress in advancing LGBTQ rights and protections, and the organization’s focus on lived equality. “For us, lived equality means folks in their daily lives being able to experience and benefit [from] the laws that exist … one of those barriers is access to health care, is making sure that young people are safe in schools, but also ensuring that people have positive mental health experiences. Unfortunately, a lot of young LGBT people go through adverse childhood experiences and those traumatic experiences have lasting impact on their lives,” Fuscarino said.
