Last July, Jersey City Councilwoman Amy DeGise hit a cyclist who had run a red light at an intersection in the city. She drove off and didn’t report the accident for another six hours, leading to many calls for her resignation. After being charged with, and pleading guilty to, leaving the scene of an accident, DeGise was fined $5,000 and lost her license for a year.
In her first television interview since the court preceding, DeGise defended her decision to remain in office and said that at the time of the accident she had no idea she had hit anyone. She said she found it hard to watch video footage of the incident and “wanted to throw up” when she saw it.
