The federal corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) continued on Tuesday with more — and more intense — cross-examination of Jose Uribe, one of the prosecution’s star witnesses.
Uribe was originally charged alongside Menendez, the senator’s wife Nadine Menendez and associates Wael Hana and Fred Daibes in the sweeping international bribery scandal. Uribe has since plead guilty and confessed to buying Nadine Menendez a Mercedes Benz in exchange for the senior senator’s help in deterring investigations into his businesses.
Defense attorneys on Tuesday attacked Uribe’s credibility, attempting to use his admitted prior crimes as reason for jurors to doubt his latest account. Uribe’s testimony, which began on Friday, is expected to continue into a fourth day on Wednesday.
