From deceptive car sales to shady contractors, consumers in New Jersey lodged more than 18,000 complaints with the state last year. The Division of Consumer Affairs released the data as part of National Consumer Protection Week to spur interest in more consumer protections. Vehicle sales and repairs topped the list of consumer complaints; more than 2,500 complaints related to repairs, sales, towing and parts pricing were submitted to the Division of Consumer Affairs in 2022.

Home improvement was next, amassing some 2,300 complaints. Grievances about major appliances came in third, with more than 1,000 submissions. Internet sales and online banking were also major sources of frauds and scams. We discuss the need for consumers to be vigilant and to be their own watchdogs and advocates.
