In Woodbridge Township, worried parents are looking for answers after more than 100 former students and staff of Colonia High School developed rare brain tumors. Radon and radiological testing was recently carried out in and around the high school grounds but the results aren’t available yet. Parents want to see more tests and they also want the option of keeping their kids at home.
Dr. Joseph Massimino, Superintendent of Woodbridge Township School District, confirmed that the governor’s office has not granted permission for the district to allow a remote learning option for Colonia High students since those learning models were reserved for COVID-19-related closures. Parents pushed back on that answer in a letter, and at a meeting of the board.
“We need the health departments, we need the state departments to take action. If you go to the petition we started and read the comments, it’s heartbreaking to see how many people have had cancer. It’s letting people know what’s going on. Right now we have over 2,800 people who signed it. It’s only two days active,” said Anne Dinkel, Colonia High School alumna.
