College students in quarantine as omicron cases keep climbing

If omicron is inevitable, especially in college dorms, what does that mean for college's spring semester?

“It’s been a wild couple days, filled with a lot of tests of various kinds — finals and Covid.” Isabel Kossoy spoke from her bedroom in Fair Lawn, where she’s quarantined after returning home from Cornell University, which declared a COVID-19 Code Red after more than 900 students there tested positive over the past week.

Cornell’s not alone. New York University and Princeton both shifted final exams to a remote format, after seeing COVID-19 cases spike. While both Rutgers and Montclair State University continue with no changes in COVID-19 protocol, epidemiologist Stephanie Silvera predicts, it’s just a matter of time: “Case rates are gonna go up everywhere. They just haven’t gotten here, yet. And so it’s a little bit of rolling of the dice. Can we make it to the end of this semester, without seeing a spike like you see at a place like Cornell?” If omicron is inevitable, especially in college dorms, what does that mean for the spring semester?
