The political science course at Rider University taught by Micah Rasmussen, director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider, is one that Rasmussen said he could have offered in this past. But it’s especially apt now because young people have become more involved in politics and are more interested in a class hyper-focused on statewide elections.

“I spent my entire career in New Jersey politics, and in New Jersey government. I think our politics are fascinating, I think that students can learn from them,” Rasmussen said. “The Trump years and the post-Trump years have really brought into focus, for a lot of people, how important it is to be engaged, even if you don’t want to be. It’s important that you be engaged. Somebody else is engaged, and they sure want to influence the process,” added Rasmussen, who said his goal now is to get students even more engaged.

Each student taking the New Jersey Government and Politics class tracks one race in the congressional midterm elections in New Jersey, with most opting for the 7th District battle between Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski and his Republican challenger Tom Kean Jr.
