Gov. Phil Murphy is holding details of his budget close to the vest. He is due to deliver his budget address on Tuesday at the State House.

On Monday, a coalition of progressive activists under the banner For The Many NJ gathered outside the State House and called on the governor to share their priorities. “If you want know what a state values, look at its budget. If you care about investing in our schools, show us in the budget. If you care about health care access, show us in the budget,” said Antoinette Miles, political director of the New Jersey Working Families Party.

Labor, environmental and immigrants rights groups called on Murphy to “Stop the Sunset,” as in the sunset of the corporate-business tax surcharge, which is scheduled to sunset at the end of 2023. “This is our third largest revenue raiser in the state, so if this goes away and sunsets at the end of the year, we’ll be out $600 million and we’ll have to make it up somehow,” said Nicole Rodriguez, executive director of NJ Policy Perspective.
