Mayor Sal Bonaccorso of Clark is charged with official misconduct, forgery and falsifying records, according to the state attorney general’s office.
State prosecutors allege the 63-year-old mayor used his public office to benefit his private landscaping company and accuse him of submitting false and fraudulent paperwork to nearly two dozen towns to help his company improperly remove hundreds of underground storage tanks.
Clark officials have been under investigation since 2020 when a police department whistleblower captured secret recordings of the mayor and police brass using racial slurs and disparaging remarks about Black people and women in the police force.
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin on Monday said the state found no criminal misconduct in the racism probe and said these charges are separate. But prosecutors called for Clark’s police chief and others to be fired.
