Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small has been charged with witness tampering in his ongoing child abuse scandal.

According to court documents, Small is accused of telling his teenage daughter to “do him a favor and twist up” her story in September, days before the mayor was indicted on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.

Small’s daughter had told law enforcement her parents had physically and mentally abused her, leading to Small and his wife, Atlantic City Public Schools Superintendent La’Quetta Small, being charged. The Smalls deny the allegations and have pleaded not guilty.

Atlantic City High School Principal Constance Days-Chapman, a family friend of the Smalls, and the school’s secretary Toria Young, who is identified as a cousin of the Smalls’ daughter, also face official misconduct charges for allegedly failing to notify law enforcement of possible abuse.

Mayor Small has refused to step down from office despite growing calls for his resignation. He is due in court again Dec. 3.
