As U.S. Rep. Andy Kim campaigns to unseat embattled U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, the race to succeed Kim in the House will see its first showdown this weekend.
Monmouth County Democrats will hold their first convention of the year to see who gets their support for the party’s nomination for Kim’s 3rd District seat. Two former Assembly running mates — Carol Murphy and Herb Conaway — are vying for the nomination, with Conaway holding the edge with the support of Democratic party leaders.
“Carol Murphy is pretty formidable and people are always talking about wanting to diversify the delegation with women, but I think that Conaway has had a long career,” said James Gee, the founding principal of Stono Public Affairs. “He’s both a doctor and a lawyer. His credentials are impeccable. He’s been a loyal Democratic soldier for years.”
