If you woke up to a deposit in your bank account from the state of New Jersey Tuesday morning, you’re probably one of the early recipients of the state’s “Anchor” property-tax relief payments. Deposits started hitting accounts Tuesday for more than 800,000 New Jersey residents who signed up to receive their payment electronically. Paper checks will start going out in early April for those who prefer payment that way.
More than 1.7 million people applied for the program, the majority of them homeowners, although more than 500,000 renters also applied. The state, which is on track to finalize nearly all of the payments by May 3, has set up a hotline (1-888-238-1233) for anyone trying to track down their payment. People can also check the status of their payment at https://www.nj.gov/treasury/taxation/anchor/index.shtml.
Gov. Phil Murphy has included the Anchor program in his budget for the next fiscal year, as part of his plan to provide more property-tax relief to New Jersey residents.
