Undocumented workers in New Jersey, who say the effects of the pandemic continue to take a toll on them, gathered in Paterson Thursday demanding state officials pass legislation that would provide $1 billion in aid to help them get back on their feet.

“We’re still in the pandemic and we’re still struggling. We are immigrants and we pay taxes and we still haven’t received any of the economic relief like some people who have legal status have received so far,” said Riqui.

Advocates from Make the Road New Jersey say undocumented immigrants pay almost $600 million in state and local taxes every year. Sara Cullinane, director of Make the Road New Jersey, said, “We have a great Excluded New Jerseyeans Fund that can reach many people but many hundreds of thousands are still left behind.”
