Survivors, family members, community leaders and government officials gathered at memorial events around New Jersey and beyond on Monday to mark the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks 22 years later. The solemn anniversary comes as many who lost loved ones continue to struggle to find closure — and as the lengthy military justice proceedings against the alleged planners of the attacks drag on.
It’s been more than a decade since five prisoners currently held at Guantanamo Bay were arraigned for their roles in the attacks. Military prosecutors last year offered the defendants plea deals that would spare them the death penalty, but defense lawyers sought additional conditions such as a promise that the accused would not be held in solitary confinement and that they would receive civilian treatment for health conditions they claim resulted from CIA torture.
President Joe Biden last week rejected those conditions, according to The New York Times.
