The NJ PBS digital documentary series “21” examines a simple question: Does where you live in the state affect how you live? The “21” series profiles one person in each of New Jersey’s 21 counties and looks at the social determinants that affect that person’s life.
The latest film introduces us to Mary-Beth and Scott Thompson and how their commitment to keeping the coastline in Monmouth County clean runs deep. The South Jersey natives have been making waves as volunteers with Clean Ocean Action for nearly 30 years and have now recruited their kids and their grandkids to help keep the ocean safe.
The Thompsons and their three sons grew up with Clean Ocean Action, volunteering at fundraising events and are currently Beach Sweep captains. They have taught their children about the importance of caring for and protecting the environment.
“Our children really are our inspiration,” Mary-Beth says. “What’s important is carrying it forward and teaching generation after generation to become stewards for their environment.”
