In an epidemic that sees no end, just one summer month saw 163 “suspected” drug-related deaths in New Jersey — more than five a day — according to the state medical examiner’s office. That number for August is actually an improvement, as 2024 totals so far have been down every month compared to previous years, and total less than 1,400.
