On Tuesday, New Jersey voters selected their candidates for November’s general election.
Many candidates won by significant margins, as in the contests for Senate in the 3rd Legislative District.
The likeliest reasons for the big victory margins are that many candidates already have their party’s backing or they have more money to spend on campaigns compared to other candidates. Many have the benefit of the “party line” on the ballots, which tends to favor incumbents or party favorites.
Most incumbents ran unopposed in the primary, but Republicans see an opportunity to win seats in the general election, hoping to take control of one or both houses of the Legislature. For the primary, many eyes were on those districts that potentially will be competitive in the general election.
Because of the way districts are drawn, favoring one party or the other, the winner of the primary election in most districts almost always wins the general election.
