Earlier this month, the Murphy administration released the statewide results of its 2022 student assessments, which showed performance fell off markedly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that the state has finally provided school-by-school results, a far more nuanced picture has emerged.

One the one hand, the Student Learning Assessments (SLAs) released late Friday reveal significant drops between 2019 and 2022 in many schools and districts, heightening the worries about so-called learning loss due to the pandemic.

In one Newark school, passing rates in the eighth grade went from three out of four meeting the state’s proficiency standards in language arts and math to fewer than one in four.

But on the other hand, the swings in performance varied widely across schools and districts, including more than a dozen schools that saw all of their students meeting or exceeding the state’s standards.

Doubtless, there will be no shortage of comment and debate regarding the results in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, check out NJ Spotlight News’ special data tool to see how your community’s schools fared in the tests.
