In Wildwood on Friday, workers hoisted flags and set up speakers as preparations were finalized for a rally on the beach Saturday by former President Donald Trump.

The presumptive Republican nominee for November’s presidential election is returning to host his first rally in New Jersey since January 2020.

Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr., a Republican, said the rallies bring hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions, to local business owners at a time when tourists don’t usually flock to his city.

“Summers in Wildwood, the tourist season is Fourth of July to about the second, third week of August,” Troiano said.

Troiano said 20,000 tickets have been requested for the rally — about the number of people that the beach can accommodate.

Members of New Jersey’s Democratic congressional delegation condemned Saturday’s rally during separate press conferences on Friday.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-11th) said Trump “really undermined the economic viability of Atlantic City” with his previous business dealings.

Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th) criticized Trump for not committing to accept the results of this year’s election. “I think it’s an affront to our state and the values that we have in New Jersey,” he said. “When you try to shut down people’s ability to vote, when you try to say that even though they’ve gone through the process and someone’s elected, that you’re not going to recognize that election — you are basically against democracy. You become a tyrant.”
