The Russian invasion of Ukraine had not yet reached its one year anniversary when Pete Reed, a volunteer medic from Burlington County, was killed by a Russian missile as he was working in the city of Bakhmut. Reed’s death was a sharp reminder of a war that may normally feel distant for many New Jerseyans.
Alex Potter, Reed’s wife, joined Reed in working with Global Response Medicine in conflict zones around the world, including in Mosul, Iraq in 2016, as ISIS fought for control of the city. Potter remembered Reed and his impact in a conversation with NJ Spotlight News’s Briana Vannozzi, who herself knew Reed from growing up in the same town.
