The Chatham School District is standing by its decision to continue in-person learning despite a surge in COVID-19 cases in New Jersey. Officials say keeping students out of the classroom puts their learning off track. The increase in positive cases is creating a staffing shortage but officials say they are doing their best to make sure there is adequate coverage. If the time comes when that is no longer possible, a switch to remote learning will be considered.
“We think it’s safer for kids to be in school first off. When they’re not in school it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safer. They may be better shielded from COVID but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re safer overall,” said Michael LaSusa, superintendent of schools.
