As people all over the state wait for disgraced Sen. Bob Menendez’ final day in office, all eyes are on the shortlist for his replacement.
Gov. Phil Murphy is set to announce his choice soon, and calls from the Hispanic community for Patricia Campos-Medina to take the Senate seat until the term expires in January have been loud and resounding.
“The argument is being made that that seat should be replaced by a loyal and growing significant constituency to the Democratic Party,” said Charles Stile, columnist for NorthJersey.com.
If Campos-Medina were to be named, she would be the first Latina to serve as a U.S. senator from New Jersey. But, experts believe, although her appointment would be historic, it would also be a long shot.
Another major front-runner Murphy could name would be Rep. Andy Kim (D-3rd), the Democrat running in the general election this November for the Senate seat and its full six-year term beginning in January. Naming Kim as the replacement could help the Democratic Party have a leg up and give Kim a platform on which to campaign on for the November election.
“I highly doubt that,” said Stile. “I think the Murphy family has not come to terms with her [Tammy Murphy’s] loss. They lost and they are not about to reward people who beat them.”
Other names in consideration are longtime Murphy adviser and current private citizen, George Helmy and Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way who is no stranger to the call to serve in a crisis. She stepped into the late Sheila Oliver’s shoes to become the lieutenant governor.
