President Joe Biden on Wednesday morning signed a bipartisan, $95 billion foreign aid package that delivers long sought arms and ammunition to Ukraine for its ongoing war with Russia. Also in the package is aid to Taiwan and other allied nations in Japan to counter Chinese aggression in the region.
NJ Spotlight News spoke with Alain Sanders, a professor emeritus of political science at Saint Peter’s University, about the significance of the aid package.
A Monmouth University poll found Americans are split over the package, with 43% in favor and 35% opposed.
Securing the deal is seen as a major win for Biden, who has urged Congress for months to bring relief to Ukraine before Russia launches a new offensive. But the package also includes controversial arms support for Israel, as that nation continues a war in Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians. That inclusion spurred some Democrats in Congress to vote against the package.
