How NJ schools are dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks

Even as cases rise, more school districts are transitioning to increased in-person instruction

At least three more school districts — Woodbridge, Keyport and Cherry Hill — are switching to online-only instruction after staff and students tested positive for COVID-19. School districts continue to toggle between types of learning with more than three dozen total school outbreaks and almost 150 coronavirus cases linked to them.

Nevertheless, nearly 70% of the state’s 800 districts, charter and special needs schools have moved to some in-person learning model.

The state is hoping a new round of personal protective equipment will help and is distributing nearly 2.5 million masks to schools through the federal government. Correspondent Joanna Gagis checks in with two school systems which NJ Spotlight News has been tracking throughout the pandemic. Will more masks and gloves make a difference?
