New Jersey’s watchdog agency is calling for stronger laws to crack down on “ghost guns,” illegal weapons made from kits.
Ghost guns are easy to assemble using 3-D printing technology and are untraceable by law enforcement because they lack serial numbers.
The State Commission of Investigation released a report Tuesday urging lawmakers to update and strengthen gun control laws and implement measures to ban the possession of the printing technology used to create these guns.
While New Jersey already prohibits the manufacturing and sale of ghost gun designs, there are currently no criminal penalties for possessing the software required to create them. This needs to quickly change, the State Commission of Investigation says.
In 2023, authorities recovered 332 ghost guns in the state, and 433 the previous year.
