The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates of any wealthy nation, specifically among Black births. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show Black women are three times more likely to face maternal morbidities than their white counterparts. The rate increased 26% since the start of COVID-19, due to disproportionate health complications and systemic inequalities in the health care system.

To mark this year’s Black Maternal Health week, Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday hosted a roundtable with cabinet officials to address the disparities.

“This is also an issue that is not just about healthcare, it is about treating a woman as a whole human being,” said Harris. “Understanding that if we are to expect and actually influence positive outcomes on this issue we must see her then as a whole human being.”
