Editor’s note: The video in this report may be disturbing to watch.
The Jersey City mayor’s office released video footage from a hit-and-run accident involving a Jersey City councilwoman. In the video, cyclist Andrew Black appears to run through a red light heading south on Martin Luther King Drive. Councilwoman Amy DeGise’s black SUV collides with him in the intersection, tossing him over the bike and into the street. Black can then be seen putting on his shoe and limping to the curb. Reports say he was treated for minor injuries. DeGise was issued summonses for leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report it.
Following the release of the footage at least two Jersey City councilmembers Wednesday called for DeGise to resign. Some have criticized the handling of the incident as not fair. DeGise is the daughter of Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise and she is the former chair of the Hudson County Democratic Organization. An online petition has collected a few hundred signatures in favor of her resignation.
