Four million people have now fled the war in Ukraine, surpassing even the highest refugee predictions made when the war started. President Joe Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, committing to supply Ukraine with an additional $500 million in direct aid.
Just a day after Russia announced it would reduce its military activity in Kyiv and Chernihiv, Ukrainian officials say the bombing in those cities has worsened, calling it a “full-scale, armed aggression.” Chernihiv’s mayor says the city was under “colossal attack,” with homes, stores and other civilian sites targeted. Officials in Mariupol say that nearly 5,000 people have been killed with nearly 100,000 still trapped in the city. New satellite photos show that 90% of buildings in Mariupol have been damaged and 40% of them have been destroyed.
The Pentagon said Wednesday it hasn’t seen any evidence that Russia is de-escalating its attacks in Ukraine.
