“I’m happy,” Galyna Perederii says. She and her family became eligible for Temporary Protected Status — or TPS — under expanded eligibility granted this week to Ukrainians in the U.S. by the Biden administration. By extending the deadline for TSP applications for Ukrainians by an extra six weeks, the U.S. opened eligibility to an estimated 60,000 additional Ukrainian refugees who arrived in the U.S. by April 11.

While these families need to find long-term shelter, jobs and medical care, obtaining protected status can involve months of navigating government red tape and application fees. Refugees are seeking help from immigration attorneys who volunteered free assistance.
