The Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) says New Jersey is on track to finalize about 900 adoptions this year. However, there are typically 1200 children on the waiting list for adoption — some are teens and some have special needs.
Kurtis and Qyzon Jackson, 8 and 7 years old respectively, were part of the foster care system for several years until they were placed with Debra Ekpo in Newark, a 55 year-old woman with grown children of her own. They were in her care for nearly a year before they were legally adopted by Ekpo. The boys are among 200 foster children to have their adoptions finalized last month. Despite her initial concerns, Epco felt compelled to provide Kurtis and Qyzon a stable, loving home. Desiree Taylor files this report.
