A crackdown by the state attorney general’s office against alleged anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination has led five towns to update language on their websites related to marriage licenses.

Estell Manor, Fairview, Hanover, Linden and South Toms River had previously published marriage license forms online with language limiting them to heterosexual couples, according to the state. Those forms restricted gender options to only male and female, forcing nonbinary and transgender residents to misgender themselves.

The municipalities have agreed to update the forms, create new anti-discrimination policies and train their employees on the state’s anti-discrimination laws.
