In statements to NJ Spotlight News, neither Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin nor Sen. President Nick Scutari committed to posting the bills in Gov. Phil Murphy’s latest gun safety package for a vote. Coughlin, who called the shooting in Uvalde, Texas a “barbaric attack,” added that New Jersey needs to “look to strengthen gun safety laws.” Scutari hasn’t taken a stance on the new bill package but said he would “keep an open mind on any additional actions that will reduce gun violence.”

Tougher gun laws are one way to combat the problem, said Mike Anestis, executive director of the New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center at Rutgers University, in an interview with NJ Spotlight News.
