Another unthinkable act of gun violence has taken place, this time on one of the country’s largest college campuses. Three students were killed and five others critically wounded Monday night after a gunman opened fire in two locations at Michigan State University.

The victims were killed in an academic building and nearby student center, forcing terrified students to hide in dorms and classrooms for hours. Authorities say the suspected gunman, 43-year-old Anthony McRae, killed himself and was found with a note in his pocket containing threats against two schools in Ewing, New Jersey, where he once lived. It set off a cascade of events Tuesday morning in Mercer County, where district officials closed schools and dispatched police to remain on all school grounds throughout the day.

The Ewing Police Department confirmed the violence was isolated to Michigan and said the suspected gunman had a history of mental illness but hasn’t resided in the town for years.
