Getting turned away from the beach is not what you want during a week like this. But that’s what happened to swimmers at several bay and ocean beaches along the Jersey Shore.
The state Department of Environmental Protection banned swimming for a time at five beaches in Ocean and Monmouth counties after levels of fecal bacteria exceeding the state standard were detected in the water. It’s a problem that has plagued the state for years; it’s caused mainly by stormwater runoff that delivers fecal bacteria to ocean and bay waters.
