A federal judge in Texas, appointed by former President Donald Trump, is expected to decide soon on a lawsuit that wants to end the distribution of mifepristone, one of the most common and effective drugs used in medication abortions.
The lawsuit seeks to overturn the drug’s decades-old Food and Drug Administration approval. It’s the most significant abortion-related case since Roe v. Wade was overturned last June, and will have implications even in Democratic-controlled states like New Jersey where abortion rights are protected.
Kimberly Mutcherson, co-dean and professor of law at Rutgers-Camden, breaks down the lawsuit and its potential implications.
