Union workers at Anheuser-Busch reached a tentative labor agreement with the nation’s largest brewer to avoid a strike at its U.S. plants, including the one in Newark.

The Teamsters union, which represents roughly 5,000 workers at Anheuser-Busch, on Wednesday night announced a five-year tentative deal that significantly would boost pay, improve health care and retirement benefits, and offer more job protections for employees nationwide. The current contract was set to expire after Thursday.

The Teamsters had been preparing for the first strike in the U.S. against the brewer since the 1970s. The workers still need to vote to ratify the contract.
